Spot Trading: Market vs Limit Orders
Understand the difference between market and limit orders on GroveX Spot and how liquidity, price and slippage affect execution.
Spot trading
Spot trading exchanges one asset for another at current market conditions.
For example, BTC/USDT represents a spot market where BTC is the base asset and USDT is the quote asset.
Two common order types are Market and Limit.
Market order
A market order prioritizes execution speed.
When you submit a market buy or sell, the order matches against available orders in the order book at the best available prices.
The final execution price is not guaranteed to equal the last displayed market price.
Market order advantages
- Designed for immediate execution when sufficient liquidity is available.
- Simple when execution is more important than choosing an exact price.
Market order risks
- Slippage can occur.
- A large order can fill across several price levels.
- Thin liquidity or a wide spread can produce a less favorable average execution price.
Limit order
A limit order lets you specify the price at which you are willing to buy or sell.
The order executes only when the market can match at your limit price or a better price.
Limit order advantages
- More control over execution price.
- Useful when you are willing to wait for a specific price.
Limit order limitations
- The order may remain open.
- It may fill only partially.
- It may never fill if the market does not reach the required price.
Market versus limit
Use a market order when execution speed is the main priority and you accept the available order-book price.
Use a limit order when price control is the main priority and you accept that the order may wait or not fill.
Check liquidity before trading
Before placing an order, review:
- bid and ask prices;
- spread;
- order-book depth;
- order size.
Larger orders can experience more slippage, particularly on markets with less liquidity.
After placing an order
Use the Orders or Trade History area to review:
- order status;
- filled amount;
- average execution price;
- fees;
- remaining open quantity for limit orders.
